"FOR VALOUR"
On August 16th,1917, at Frezenberg,Belgium, Lance corporal Frederick George Room, of Congleton Road, St Georges was serving with the 2nd Battalion,Royal Irish Regiment. The Regiment was holding a line of shell-holes and short trenches and had suffered many casualties. Room,then just 22 years old,was in charge of the stretcher bearers. He worked continously under intense fire,dressing the wounded and helping to evacuate them Throughout this period,with complete disregard for his owm life, he showed'unremtting devotion to his duties;Room's Victoria Cross is on display at the National Army Museum,Chelsea.
The brave stretcher bearer died in Bristol in January 1932,aged 36. He is buried at Greebank Cemetery.
